While many people think of Talmud primarily as a source of Jewish law, the Talmud is full of rabbinic stories that present the ideas, attitudes, and theology of our ancestors. In this 3-part class, we will examine an extended series of rabbinic stories and midrashim about the incident of the twelve spies discussed in the Book of Numbers. In addition to our study of the Talmudic text itself, we will also consider a variety of  modern understandings of this text with a focus on a reading from the 20th century philosopher Emmanuel Levinas.

This class will provide an opportunity for direct study of the primary sources in the Talmud in either the original or in translation.  We’ll be creating a bet midrash-style learning environment with hevruta/paired learning.

This course is free and open to the community.  Everyone is welcome.  Contact Rabbi Rubenstein at ravsteven@cbahm.org with questions.  Advanced registration, see below, is encouraged.
