Masorti Movement in Israel As you know Sderot and more recently Ashkelon have been under attack from Hamas rockets coming from Gaza. Our sister movement in Israel, the Masorti Movement continues to play a role in both these communities. Here is what they are doing and how you can help: In Ashkelon, where the Masorti movement has long had a large and active congregation with a gan (Kindergarten) program involving about 200 children, the immediate need is to reinforce parts of the building, including putting shatter-proof glass on some large windows. This will cost at least $60,000, and possibly more. In Sderot, Masorti has already arranged more than two dozen day trips to take residents on excursions to Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv or other locations (including two busloads of children to an amusement park). In each instance, in addition to visiting places such as the Israel Museum, Sderot residents were treated to a good restaurant meal. More such trips are planned. Masorti's Marom program for young adults has also sponsored several lectures and films in Sderot and has ongoing program activities there. Masorti kehillot (congregations) have additionally welcomed visitors from Sderot either for Shabbat or for programs during the week. We want to continue these efforts, but we need to know the resources we can commit. Please send in your contributions or pledges to: Masorti Foundation 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 832, New York, NY 10015. Please make checks payable to Masorti Foundation. |
